My wife and I arrived in Italy a couple of days ago. Two weeks in Praiano, two in Positano, both on the beautiful Amalfi Coast. I have very limited internet, but there's an internet cafe where I'm sitting now. I'll post a few photos as I get the chance in this thread. I've brought a range of serious compacts along. So far I've shot with the RX1 and Nikon A and a couple of 75mm shots with the OMD. I'll use the Fuji with the 14mm some and the DP1M quite a bit I'd imagine, but the RX1 and Nikon will probably be my primary shooters on this trip. Here are a few from the first day at Pompeii and then getting settled in Praiano...

Two views from our terrace - not too hard to take!

Not sure how regularly I'll post, but I'll check in when I can.

Ray,

Back in the pre-digital era I carried two identical Minox 35GTs, one with slide, the other with negative or black-and-white film. I can imagine carrying two non-zoom compacts, each of them with a different focal lenght (say, 28 and 90 mm in 35-equivalent terms). I would not dream carrying more than that, I think it somehow counteracts the purpose of compacts. How do you do: carry them all, or leave part of your arsenal in the hotel room?
Enjoy your trip

Luis

Thanks everyone. I can only upload photos from the Internet cafe with full wifi, but turns out I can surf and post a bit using the 3G iPad the owners of the house left for us. More photos later this morning. For those in the US, they'll probably be up before you will be on the days I can fit espresso and a pastry into my morning routine - MOST mornings!

Christina, the RX1 is a great travel camera when I'm out specifically to shoot (I carried it around Pompeii, for example), but the little Nikon A seems to be with me wherever I go on this trip and, while its not QUITE the IQ champ that the RX1 or DP1M are, it's damn close and punches so far above its diminutive size it's not even funny. And 28mm just feels like my most natural focal length, so I think the Nikon is gonna get an awful lot more use than anything else this trip. It's quickly turned into my favorite camera...

Dennis, I enjoyed Pompeii for an hour or so of the 2 1/2 hours we were there. I've read a lot about it and seeing the actual place was very interesting, but after an hour, I felt like I'd seen what I was gonna see. I'm not quite of the "you've seen one ruin, you've seen 'em all" school of thought, but I sort of tend that way - 40-50 and I've had my fill! And I'm better at seeing ruins than I tend to be in most museums!

Luis, I brought five cameras (four of mine, one loaner), but I'm usually only carrying one at a time when I'm out doing other things than shooting - usually just the very small Nikon A. The others stay in the apartment mostly - the rental agency calls it a "villa" and it's very very nice, but its really a small apartment with insanely beautiful views! I'm sure on some days I'll go out specifically on photo walks and I'll take my small Domke with 2-3 cameras. I'll take the RX1 and either the Nikon A or DP1M, and sometimes maybe the XE1 with the 14mm. I may take the OMD with the 75mm out at some point, but that's mostly for getting shots of family and probably won't leave the apartment much. Although I've taken some shots of stuff on the street below from our balcony with the 75mm and almost wish I'd brought something longer. There was a great church celebration with a huge procession through the main street of town last night and I had a great vantage point for it and shot it all with the 75 - photos to come later... But not to worry - I'm not walking around weighed down with gear! That's why I'm into compacts in the first place!

Turns out I got a little mobile hotspot I brought with me working (hadn't until this morning) and I can even load images onto Flickr, as long as I keep them to small versions. So, I'm good to go... Here are some from yesterday:

This is one I'll probably take 1000 versions of because its so beautiful from our balcony - I'll try to only post 999 of them or so. This one is with the Fuji and the 14mm.

Don't need a lot of clothes here in the summer Sue. A few shirts, a couple pair of shorts, some underwear and the sandals I wore over. Plenty of room for everything in one not-too-big checked bag...

But if it came down to it, cameras for sure take priority over clothes! ;)

You only took five cameras to the trip with you Ray? :D

Lovely photos! Enjoy the trip!

Yeah, but I'll be using two of them the vast majority of the time. And they all fit into a pretty small Domke F10 bag, so a decent m43 setup would have taken up at least as much room...

Here are a few from today - took a hike down to a sort of tower down by the water. MANY MANY steps! Getting in shape for our second two weeks in Positano where we have 90 steps between the street and our front door. And however many hundred additional steps in the other direction to get to the center of town... All taken with the RX1 except the last sunset shot, which was the Nikon...

More of the same today, but all shot with the Sigma DP1M. Unfortunately, the incredible IQ of this camera doesn't come through adequately in small display sizes, but that's all I can realistically upload until I'm home in August.
