Nikon Showcase Post Nikon Df Photos

Nice macros Ben. Maybe not technically macros, but they have that effect...

Thanks Ray, I appreciate your comment. Yes, not true macro, but I used my first generation 24-120mm f3.5-5.6 which is permanently on my Df, and here I set the camera to Dx mode effectively giving me 180mm at the long end, allowing me to get a bit closer. However as you know only 7 million pixels but I'm pleased with the result!

Antonio, nice. Particularly the color shots...

Haven't been shooting much lately at all, but my daughters were in town this weekend and I got a couple of informal portraits of my youngest with her boyfriend. They'd just gotten back from a friend's wedding and were dressed a little more nicely than usual, so I figured I should grab a couple. These were both with the 58 f1.4G at f1.6 and 1.4 respectively...

Pictures aside, I too am fortunate to have three amazing daughters. I didn't realize how much I would enjoy our relationship after they became adults. It beats the teen years! Congratulations on a lovely family.

It is an amazing thing, isn't it? We were sitting at dinner the other night with our two seemingly suddenly fully adult daughters (27 & 28), one about a month and a half away from being a full fledged doctor, the other engaged in a pretty successful sales career, with the two of them engaged in an incredibly deep and interesting discussion about the various ethical issues that come up and the ethical lapses they both see on a regular basis in their professional lives and I realized sort of all at once, "our work is done here"! Two fully engaged and fully aware adults with a lot of perspective for their age. It was just the nicest feeling I ever need to have and hopefully I'll have it many more times in the coming years. In addition to loving them deeply as my daughters, they're just damn good company and fun to hang out with. Nothing I've ever done or will do in life gives me more pleasure and satisfaction than being a father (and husband)...

Recently tried out a 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens. Not at all happy with the optical performance. Soft at every focal length and AF fine tuning did not help at all. However, I did get some things from the weekend.

That earlier, variable aperture, version of the 24-120 is pretty widely disliked. I never shot with one, but I've never seen anything positive written about it. The newer, constant f4 version, is evidently a much better lens. There've been reports of some sample variation with the f4 lens, but I like mine as much as I could ever like a zoom. Most owners seem quite pleased with it and reviewers are pretty positive given that it's more of a kit zoom than a pro level zoom. Nonetheless, I've seen a number of 24-70 f2.8 owners who bought the 24-120 f4 for when they needed the greater range and ended up selling the 24-70 because they never found themselves using it. That said, for web-sized shots, that earlier lens looks fine and your photos are good regardless of some slight optical imperfections...

I was hoping that is wasn't that bad! lol But it is pretty garbage, at least to my eyes. I wanted something with a little more reach that would at least equal the IQ of my older 28-85/3.5-4.5. This 24-120 isn't even close. The 28-85 is far superior. the f/4 is a bit bigger than I wanted to go.

I was wanting something small like a do everything I could slap on the Df for those times when I didn't want to deal with prime lens changes.
I think I'll start sniffing around the Nikon/Tamron 28-300mm or see how well the 70-210/4-5.6 fairs.

Wanting something smaller, versatile when I don't need the 24-70/2.8 or the 70-200/2.8.
