Ricoh The Ricoh GR image thread

Dusted off the old GR and took it for a walk:

Joined the GR II club yesterday but the battery was dead so I'm considering today as day 1.

I cannot believe how light this thing is. Mind blown. Still can't figure out my preferred settings but I'm looking forward to messing with it.

Great stuff. I'm sure you'll love it.

Definitely try out snap focus, one the greatest features of the GR.

One tip - try putting the strap on using the lower anchor on the grip side. Works much better IMO.

Just barely got to sample some snap focus for a few buildings downtown. Gotta get used to it but I think I'm going to love it.

Currently trying to find the sweet middle ground between b&w and rich b&w modes.

Tried putting some RAW's onto my iPad last night and they showed up extremely grainy and blotchy and unusable. Probably something I'm doing wrong. Converted a few in camera and they were just fine.

It's a learning process but I'll get there. The Ricoh hasn't left my side since getting it.

If you are shooting RAW on the GR II, go back and hit the play button to view the photos. When you're looking at a photo, hit the middle "menu/ok" button. This will open a menu and the top line on mine says "RAW Development." Once in that menu you can go thru and make all sorts of adjustments and tweaks to the image. You can apply the different filters, and make several adjustments. When done just hit the "ok" button again and it will save the edited file as a jpeg in camera.

Do you lose the RAW then?

You don't. I was initially worried about that as well. The colour processing is good and used by me from time to time, but when it comes to in-camera processing, it's all about the B&Ws, as it's very difficult if not impossible to produce exactly the same results with Lightroom/ PS/ Nik, etc.

I was wondering about that too. I know it's probably asking too much, to be able to generate a second or third JPEG from that RAW and apply some or all of the changes to JPEG-1 to JPEG-2, so you could work with 2 images from the same RAW in a kind-of iterative process, to see which looks best. I never really know if what I'm doing is going the right way until I can compare 2 or 3 edits side by side. My dream for the future is to be able with an advanced camera, to produce a "good enough" image for posting here and elsewhere, with in-camera edits, and post it here right from the camera. With iPhone and iPad, the Web browser simply takes the image from the i-device 'Library' and uploads it. With cameras it's not so simple because they don't generally have Web browsers.
