Illawarra Flame Trees are native to Eastern Australia but are commonly used as street trees in the west. Its botanic name is Brachychiton acerifolius but as kids we referred to them as Kurrajongs or 'itchy powder' trees. The latter referred to the seed pods that contained an uncomfortable fine fur that was typically emptied down the back of your enemy's shirt.
