    Nikon Nikon A curiosities

Joe, On GR the auto Hi (w minimal shutter speed) is not functional in TAv mode, because the A and S have higher priority than ISO, so the ISO will reach the ceiling before shifting down the shutter speed. I am sure you already know about the DR high trick to limit the highest ISO to about...

Ricoh Ricoh does it again: New Firmware 3.00

Ricoh Ricoh does it again: New Firmware 3.00

Has the ISO reached the maximum ISO you set? If so that's normal. If you don't want the shutter speed to drop below 1/250, then use TAv mode, the ISO will keep rising when there is not enough light. These two modes should be adequate unless you need a minimum shutter speed of 1/500s or above.

Ricoh Ricoh does it again: New Firmware 3.00

But you can already do it in Av mode with auto HI ISO specifying maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed, or am I misunderstanding what you are saying? :)

Ricoh Ricoh does it again: New Firmware 3.00

In TAv mode both A and S are fixed. What should the camera do when it reaches the ISO cap if there is one? :) I think adding 1/500s 1/1000s etc in auto HI ISO to be used in A mode would be preferable.

    Sony Zone focusing?

I've read somewhere that the sensor in Sony's small sensor is more efficient than their APSC sensor. So it is quite probable that at equivalent DOF (e.g. RX100 f2.4 vs GR/A f4), the RX100 would have better noise performance, but it would be quite incredible if it can overcome a 180% difference...
  21. A

    Sony Zone focusing?

But then one should be able to stop down GR/A more to achieve the same DOF as RX100? f4 on GR/A should be equivalent to f2.4 on RX100 in terms of DOF as well as light gathering ability and noise performance (as GR/A has larger sensor area)?

Thanks for the test, I think I like the first one for pair #3,4,and 5 - seems to have more clarity and detail (especially the forest one). Are you going to tell which one is which later? And what kind of flare is the one in pair #4??!!

    Sony Zone focusing?

I think it is the opposite? Plugging in the number to the DOF calculator, for example 50mm f1.4 at 10meter. The DOF for FF at f1.4 is around the DOF for APSC at f2.1. That means the DOF marking for 1.4 on a FF lens would be applicable to the DOF at f2.1 when the lens is used on APSC...

    Ricoh TAv Mode and ISO

There are a few tricks: 1. Set the dynamic range correction to high (it will only affect the jpg I think, more reason to shoot raw), it will practically limit the ISO to be between 320-~8000. Set the aperture/shutter shift to aperture priority. So in TAv mode, it will reach the ceiling at...

Fuji X-M1 vs Sony Nex 6 - a user comparison

Thanks Gary. I mean aperture priority -> shutter priority. With a physical dial it would be easier (still not as easy as a mode dial though I think) to turn the S knob and a physical aperture ring to switch mode. But without aperture ring scrolling from f2.8 all the way pass f16 to A with a...

Sony Made a command decision today: I'm not going to try and turn the RX1 into something it's not.

I do use the full press snap, and that's only because my default mode is MF mode with preset focus distance of 5m. Switch to AF mode with Fn button and my preset snap focus distance is 1m, so I basically have 2 preset distance, per MY set. And there are 3 MY sets, it's mind boggling...

Sony Made a command decision today: I'm not going to try and turn the RX1 into something it's not.

Snap focus/prefocus is not unique, but the ability to adjust snap focus distance one handed without looking at the LCD/viewfinder is something that set GR apart from other focus-by-wire implementation in the stealthy department, IMHO. It might not matter to those whose preferred mode of...

    50mm compact?

The PL25/1.4 and XF35/1.4 are about the same size and pretty big compared to GR and x100s. Compact Camera Meter Not sure how big the 50 module is. If AF is not important one consideration is ZM35/2.8 + mirrorless (GXR-M, NEX, etc) I pair my GR with GXR+ZM50 for people shots.

Ricoh New GR - several questions

    1. I think by AUTO they mean simple auto ISO, not AUTO Hi as the high ISO limit is not imposed while in TAv mode.
