Canon Canon Superzoom G3X 1" sensor

I have to wonder about the longer focal lengths for landscapes though, since the sheer distances involved usually mean much more air between camera and subject than with bird photography etc., and that air isn't always sparkly clean.

Well, of the 8 images used to illustrate his point, only one is what I would consider a classic "landscape photograph". (with 3 wildlife & 3 urban & the guy in boat).
Regardless of that, it's great to have the option of a longer lens - to pick little scenes out of the grand vistas.

I'm often covering the same range (24-600), but with two cameras. (E-M1 and E-M5 with the 12-60 and 75-300).
That's why I'm eyeing the G3X with some interest.
As it is (at this price, especially with the viewfinder), I'm going to wait though... For a pricedrop, or a mkII...

This is my first image with the new G3x. I don't have the settings figured out yet, so this was one of several single shots (no burst mode since I haven't gotten that far). Interestingly, all shots had equal sharpness or close enough that there wasn't an obvious difference between them at 100 percent view. This was JPEG only, and my photo editor is the 1998 edition of Paint Shop Pro, so there's very little magic here except for some gamma/curves applied along with some crude sharpening. Considering the number of steps I did in PP here, the noise is very good. And since I didn't have a solid support, I'd say the IS is extremely good.

Canon G3x at max. zoom, f5.6, 1/200 handheld/braced, ISO 200.

What I'm going to say may sound over the top, but anyway .... I have various Leicas and Panasonics and Nikons, so am well acquainted with compacts versus full-size etc. My wife has been using the Canon SX700 for a year - 1/2.3 sensor, 25-750 mm effective zoom range, and so on.

After a day with the G3x, there's no question that the difference between SX700 and G3x isn't big versus small, noise versus clean, fast versus slow, or 100 other such things. The G3x is a whole different world. She did OK street shooting with the SX700, but today she's just jumping up and down saying "I got action shots, I got good closeups of ducks in a pond, I got ...." -- and on it goes.

I thought the Moon image was clearly superior to what I took with the 720 mm setting of the Panasonic ZS50/TZ70, but this G3x is much, much better than I thought, given all of what it brings to shooting, including a very effective IS. I also like the 'group playback' feature for bursts.

Get ready for the 1" sensor to take over the world. IQ is there for most consumer needs, low light performance is much better than 1/2.3 and 1/1.7, and lenses for 1" sensor are significantly smaller than lenses for M43 and APS-C.
