Nikon Nikon P900

Why didn't I notice this 6 months ago. Thanks for the post, Steve. I almost bought the P900, and had there been any in stock the day I had "the buys" I most definitely would have done so. Its big, though. Dimensionally, larger than my K5. In many ways I am now glad they didnt have any, my P610 is doing some amazing stuff.

I don't have any interest in this camera, but I love the term "the buys". It's a condition, like the common cold - it's not an incurable lifelong condition. It comes, you get over it, and then later it comes again. I'll have to remember that the next time my wife wonders what some package is - "I was afflicted by a nasty little case of "the buys" - don't worry, feeling better now!". Hopefully I didn't pass it on to her... ;)

I had a really nasty case of "the buys" for a couple years anytime I read about cameras or looked at photos. I finally shook it. It seems to have relocated into an audio disease. Got some new speakers heading my way. I think that may cure it. :rolleyes-74:

My brother's wife has one, and her bird photography has improved greatly since she got it.

Ray,

Perhaps it would be helpful to adopt a strategy from outdoor writer Patrick McManus. The trick is to de-couple your collection of cameras from any particular, specific number. You need to get your wife thinking of "all those cameras," a nebulous, unspecified number that can expand or contract as your needs require . . .

McManus speaks of "all those fishing rods," but the key is the indefinite nature of the number.

Cheers, Jock

"The buys" don't seem to affect me nearly as much as they used to a few years ago. That's good, because now that I'm between jobs I need to save money as much as I can. :)

EDIT: I plan on focusing on bird/wildlife photography in the months ahead. The super zoom bridge cameras had my attention for a while. But I think I'll be using my Olympus E-M5 with my Panasonic 100-300mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom and crop as necessary. That's a 600mm FF equivalent at the long end with f/5.6. Anyone have any thoughts on this strategy?

I've often considered doing that, myself. Or else, just using the stuff I have, and cropping. but I do like the light weight of the superzoom and as long as you don't ask too much of it, it works quite well. If I can get more like the shots in my P610 thread, I'll be happy to keep using it.

Sue, the 1440mm equivalent that you get at the long end of your P610 is impressive. I could get that by mounting my Pentax DA 55-300mm on my Pentax Q-S1 but I'd have no viewfinder, which can be an issue in some situations. Perhaps if I tripped over a truly fabulous deal on one of the better super zooms, I'd give it a try.

I hear ya. I'm still in the market for the FZ1000 but not until the prices reduce considerably. I also (briefly) considered the FZ300 with its weather resistance, but canned that idea as I have become very used to 60x. Sad, really. For me, in the end, it comes down to weight vs IQ. If I could afford it, I'd buy the Pentax DA300mm. But I can't. Its a temptation though, to wait until I can... Now shots from that would be eminently croppable

Oef.. that's the same problem. After the speakers come the nice cables, plugs etc ;)
