Nikon Showcase Nikon Coolpix A Image Thread

The Nikon 'A' is probably unmatched in image quality for camera size. I should have snagged one of those $400 offers.

The GR matches it. I prefer the controls of the Nikon, but there isn't anything between them in terms of IQ.

I keep seeing references to close-out Coolpix A's for down in the $300-400 range, so I think they're still out there if you want one, but you might have to look around a little bit. Then again, you just bought the whole farm, so you might not be in a position to add another small barn at this point...

I bought it! Now, I'm still unhappy that Rollei shifted production of their pocket 35 film camera and cheapened the quality of it, so many years ago. And on that note, I'm hoping this is the original production quality 'A' made in Japan, or if shifted elsewhere, it's exactly the same or better quality.

I expect to use it some side by side with the 28 mm Leica Q, then donate it to my photo club in Ohio.

I don't think they ever made enough of them to shift production anywhere... In any case, enjoy it for as long as you have it. I'm sure it won't touch the Q in a lot of ways, but for my purposes, it's more than good enough (particularly in combination with my DF) and the size is a nice thing...

Here's the 2 pages I did on my crude website for the Coolpix A. Samy's is also including some kind of leather case with it, but just in case (heh) I have the Leica 18727 case made for the D-Lux 6 (Pana LX7) and it fits that case like a glove.

I really like the Coolpix A. I can't compare it to the GR, but in absolute terms it's a fun camera to use, I like the output, and it fits in my pocket.

I bought a "A" last year specifically for our visit to NYC...didn't want to lug the D-800 around. I love the camera, I hope there will be a follow-up.

Got the $399 Coolpix A special in silver - made in Japan it says, which means it's the original manufacture I suppose, and not an outsource to China etc. For a long time I wondered where I got all those extra Panasonic charging cables - the ones with the mini-mini-USB connector (smaller than mini, but the same shape, not like the micro-USB). But Nikon's cable is the same as Panasonic uses with the ZS50 and LX100 etc. Which makes me wonder....

So now the only worry is the battery, but it will probably hold a full charge.

Got a new Coolpix A ($399) after a couple years absence. Wanted to compare with Leica Q since both are a 28 mm effective focal length. The Nikon is better than I remembered, and given the small size, an amazingly powerful pocket-size tool.

Edit: Venus and Jupiter(?) in #2 - a little coma there, but I also had that with the Leica Noctilux on some shots.

Historic buildings of Charleston - I photographed these recently with the Leica Q, and since the Nikon Coolpix A and Leica Q both have the fixed 28 mm perspective lens, I thought it would be instructive to see how the Nikon handles these same scenes. It's been a great learning experience actually, since the differences help with both cameras.

Thanks Dale...yes late evening, the warm colors were beautiful.

We will be spending Oct, Nov & December in Charleston. I usually try to do the " Worldwide Photo Walk" sometime in October, you might be interested in that.
