My FE&"A".....classic &new.
That's the first time I'd seen the Nikon OVF on the A - damn, that's a pretty big looking OVF! I never use one on this camera, but if I did, I think I'd stick with the little Sigma VF-11 I have, which was made for the DP1, also with 28mm FOV and a 3:2 aspect ratio...

I wonder if we're seeing a one off here? Nikon have stopped the Coolpix A product line, there doesn't seem to be anything to replace it in the immediate future and the 1 series/ smaller sensor compacts are being promoted. If so, those special prices being offered for the Coolpix A a month or 2 ago seem in hindsight to be a very wise investment.

Well, if we don't see a replacement by late summer or autumn sometime, I'll assume it's dead. But the thing about camera announcements is that sometimes they leak rumors way in advance, and sometimes barely at all. I think the first rumors of the A were about a week before the official announcement which was about two weeks before it was available. I bought a backup of the original and would probably wait quite a while before buying a replacement, if I would at all - I have trouble envisioning it being much better in ways that would matter to me. But I don't think we know yet whether there's another one coming.

Ricoh is behind it's usual 2 year update cycle for the GR also - or at least right up against it (we had rumors in March, announcement in April, and it hit the stores in May) - and no word of a new GR either. But nobody seems convinced it's dead. Occasional rumors of new versions of both, both with 24mp sensors and not many other details. But nothing detailed enough to really believe. Just enough to make you wonder.

I personally won't be surprised either way...

What to expect next from Nikon - Nikon Rumors
→ Nikon Coolpix camera with a large sensor:
Nikon is working on new Coolpix cameras with a large sensor. Most likely there will be two different models.
On several occasions in the past Nikon's reps mentioned that they are still committed to their mirrorless and Coolpix product lines and they still see potential future in 4K video and advanced compact cameras.
I am still not sure of the size of the sensor - I am receiving rumors for everything between 1" to APS-C and full frame. Most likely there will be one model with 1" sensor and another with a DX sensor (replacement for the Coolpix A, which is already listed as discontinued). In a recent interview, Nikon's executive confirmed that a new compact camera with 1" sensor is coming in the future:
Q: Any new Coolpix A? Any plans to respond to Canon and Sony's 1-inch sensor fixed-lens compact cameras?
A: Sony's 1-inch CSC is definitely very successful. We will have a competing product in the future.

It's been a while since I did a day on the street with just the A. With all of the lust over the Leica Q recently, I thought I should spend a day and remind myself what I already have. Did one yesterday on a damp day in Philly...
