Kind of considering downsizing - suggestions pls

My brother is a fan of his EOS-M. Just wishes there were more lenses for it.

Some to consider:

Pentax K-01: slow AF but a reasonably small kit when mated to primes. Excellent 16 Mp Sony sensor.
Pentax K-S2: weatherproof, articulating screen.

My vote goes to the A6000(or NEX6) and Sigma trio.
All around very good and "cheap" if there is such a thing.
I own the Sigma trio and despite their relative slowness (f2.8) each one offers excellent bang for the buck. Instead of the NEX-6 or Axxxx you might also have a look at the older NEX-5n. Slower AF but great low-light performance and pretty cheap these days. A used Fuji XE-1/1855 combo would give you similar IQ for about the same money or slightly less though. My 1855 Fujinon outresolves my 19mm Sigma, the 'weakest' of the trio at all f-stops, it's that good.

Agreed.
I recently compared files from the NEX6/19, XE1/18-55, and the Ricoh GR.
To my eye the GR was the best followed by the Fuji and then the Sigma.

The good thing - third place in this race is still very good.

Very good indeed. I love the files from the GR a lot more than those from my X-Pro1. It pretty much boils down to grit vs. smear. Add the xtra time (and software) needed to properly develop X-Trans RAWs ... there must be some reason why I haven't sold my X stuff long ago.

For now I'll prob carry on with my Canon500D and keep an eye on eos-m's on ebay

thanks for all the replies

When you're checking out the EOS-M's on eBay, try to find one which comes with the 22mm lens - not only is the lens tiny (a true 'pancake' style lens) but it's also truly superb, optically. And at f/2 it's surprisingly fast. The lenses have acquired a very good reputation and when sold individually, they sometimes command slightly higher prices than if you can buy them 'bundled' with the camera body - so my recommendation would be to hold out, if possible, for the M + 22mm if you can. The only other thing to remember is that the newer firmware is better (with faster focusing) than the original firmware. So should you wind up buying one, the first thing to check is firmware - and update it if necessary. With the updated firmware/focusing, it may not be a DSLR-level speed demon - but I found it more than acceptable for most of what I did.

Good luck with your search!

I was gonna say get the M. Brilliant little camera that gives excellent results. Well done! There is going to be the new version 3 coming soon so hopefully the lens line up will increase.
